Alicante has always been synonymous with sun and beach. But far from clichés, the province has much to offer and hides unique places. We propose several activities to get to know it a little more this Easter vacations in Alicante.
1- Visit to Barrio de Santa Cruz
Behind the town hall and with the Castle of Santa Barbara in front we are in the neighborhood of Santa Cruz or as it is known here: the Barrio. In the very foothills of Mount Benacantil, a network of narrow, steep streets and houses with colorful facades and adorned with hundreds of pots seems to be in a small Andalusian village and not in the center of Alicante. On Holy Wednesday the “costaleros” leave the Ermita de Santa Cruz carrying four religious floats up the steep slopes. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in the city and attracts many tourists.
2- Trip to Tabarca Island
Okay, it is true that Easter in Alicante is a time of unstable weather, but if it is sunny you should not miss a visit to this beautiful island. Declared a Mediterranean Reserve with valuable seabed and large areas of posidonia meadows. If you dare to take a dip, crystal clear waters and fine sand await you to lie in the sun. And of course we can not talk about the island without mentioning its dish par excellence: the Caldero marinero de Tabarca. Rice cooked with fresh fish caught the same morning. Not to be missed.
3- The Central Market and the “tardeo”
The Central Market has always been the reference for the Saturday noon date. But in recent years the Market is just the beginning of the “tardeo” or what comes to the same thing: beers, snacks, drinks and dancing in the bars and pubs in the area of Castaños street and surroundings. A fun way to spend Saturday morning and afternoon.
4- Discover the gastronomy of Alicante
Talking about Alicante’s gastronomy is talking about quality, variety and tradition. Rice dishes are the most characteristic and popular dish, there are countless ways to prepare it: arroz a banda or senyoret, rice with rabbit, rice with crust, caldoso…. we will write a post soon just to talk about them 🙂 . In the interior of the province are prepared consistent stews based on meats and vegetables such as gazpacho. The cocas (pies), the dried salted fish, the vegetable garden of the Vega Baja, the nougats, turron and pastry, the wines of the DO Vinos Alicante that increasingly have more presence and representation outside the province… It would be impossible to list the amount of delights that we can find, so our recommendation is that if you come to La Terreta, let yourself be carried away by the thousands of sensations, smells, and flavors that we are sure will not leave you indifferent.
Happy holidays!
