Vineyard and Winemaking

 

When we talk about Insurrecte Muscat Old Vines, we talk about an insurrectionary, rebellious and revolutionary wine. With an artisanal and very limited production, only 400 bottles approx. In Alicante Delicatessen we have a few bottles of this marvel elaborated by the 4th generation of Bodegas Riko Xaló, the young winemaker Óscar Mestre, in the lands of La Marina Alta (Alicante).

The elaboration begins in the field, selecting the grapes less toasted by the sun and therefore the freshest. This achieves complex aromatic profiles, with a predominance of Muscal varietal profiles.

Sustainable viticulture, grapes selected and harvested in 10kg boxes. The Muscat of Alexandria grape variety comes from a plot located in Plà de Llíber (La Marina Alta), planted with old vines in goblet and strictly dry. The soils are ferric clay loam soils where a maximum concentration of fruit is achieved.

Fermentation is carried out in 350L Carles Llarch vats with a subsequent aging of 5 months on its own lees and spontaneous appearance of veil flower (velo flor).

It is bottled directly from the vat, without fining or stabilization to preserve its character.

A signature wine made by winemaker Óscar Mestre, the winery’s fourth generation of winemakers and viticulturists. With a very limited production and its first vintage 2019, we find ourselves with a wine that opens a new style of high-end Alicante wines.

Tasting and Pairing

 

Sight: Intense straw yellow color with light rim and greenish reflections.

Nose: Complex and subtle aromas reminiscent of citrus, fennel, grapefruit, with a predominance of Muscat varietal profiles.

Mouth: The palate is unctuous, fine and elegant, with ample structure and long persistence.

Pairing: Rice, pates, cheeses, seafood or Iberian ham.

Service temperature: Between 10-13 ºC.

The Winery

 

BODEGAS RIKO XALÓ is a winery of family tradition whose origins date back to 1947. Currently they are already the 4th generation of winemakers and winemakers of the family with the young winemaker Óscar Mestre at the head.

The winery is located in an old building of typical construction of the zone of the XVII century with buttresses and few hollows or windows, so that the light did not enter in excess as prevention in the conservation of the wine. This building has had many functions throughout its existence: wine cellar, sale of wines, wines and spirits, raisins warehouse or packing of muscatel grapes destined to table grapes.

The winery is located in Xaló, in the Marina Alta region, province of Alicante. The altitude of the winery and its vineyards are about 200 meters above sea level and a few kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea with an average annual temperature of 18º and little rainfall.
